Our Purpose

The Arizona Recovery Housing Association (AzRHA) is a statewide association that acts as a voice for recovery housing providers residential services and programs in Arizona that promote recovery from addiction. AZHRA accomplishes its goal by promoting the development and quality operation of recovery based residential services (e.g. recovery homes, halfway houses, sober living housing, transitional housing, recovery-facilitative housing).

Becoming a Member of AzRHA

Please note that joining the Arizona Recovery Housing Association (AzRHA) as a member is not the same as having a recovery home ‘certified’ by the organization. Once you are a good standing member of the association you can apply to have a home certified.

How We Certify Homes

AzRHA is pleased to continue to offer a certification program for recovery residences in Arizona. This credential recognizes organizations that offer recovery-oriented support to help individuals with substance use disorders achieve a life in recovery. AzRHA is committed to raising the bar in recovery housing through certification and in accordance with nationally recognized quality standards (NARR) that require a combination of skills that surround the business aspects of the recovery residence, best practices for recovery-oriented services and supports, and ultimately, compassion.

Earning certification ensures organizations have the knowledge necessary to be confident in recovery work. Achieving certification not only arms organizations with a feeling of accomplishment, but also it assures the public that organizations have met the standards required to operate a recovery residence ethically and according to quality standards.

Being “AzRHA Certified” ensures organizations are accountable for implementation of and compliance with the National Alliance of Recovery Residences (NARR) Quality Standards and Code of Ethics for Level 1 – 4 Recovery Residences.

Ineligible Residence

House was never certified and cannot be certified at this time. This may be because it is not a sober home, it was closed before it could be certified, or it did not pass inspection or complete remediation.
After 3 months have passed without contact with the sober home, AzRHA may move a home from the “Application Stage” or “Inspection Stage” to “Ineligible.” A week before moving a house to the “Ineligible” category, AzRHA will notify the home via email that they can take action to complete their application within the week or they will have to begin again.

Stages of Sober Home Certification

The following process describes the 4 step process for each Certification Application received by the AzRHA certification administrator.

Application

Applicant completes the online application, pays all required fees, and uploads all required documents.
Admin reviews the application within 7 business days.
If anything is missing, the applicant has 14 days to submit it.
Only complete, paid applications move to the interview stage.

Board Interview

Conducted by 2–3 board members.
Documents are reviewed and discussed.
Outcome: Approved for inspection, Conditional Approval, or Hold for corrections.
Applicant notified within 3 business days.

Onsite Inspection

Scheduled after interview approval.
Inspector completes the official inspection checklist and submits a report within 3 business days.

Accreditation Decision

Committee reviews the interview and inspection.
Decision: Full Accreditation, Conditional Accreditation (with corrective actions), or Denial.
Decision issued within 7 business days of the inspection report.

Please take your time when completing each section of the application. Providing complete, accurate, and honest information will help ensure a smoother review process and avoid unnecessary delays in application approval. Incomplete or inaccurate responses may prolong the certification and review process.
